Directory drift is the accumulating gap between the structure an organization intends its directory to have and the structure it actually has. Drift is the sum of every reasonable-looking local change whose global consequences nobody evaluated.
How drift accumulates#
No single change creates drift; the mechanism is rate. Directories change daily, review happens quarterly at best, and each unreviewed interval bakes the changes in. New nesting, new licensed groups, new exceptions: each becomes load bearing before anyone evaluates whether it should exist.
Measuring drift#
Drift becomes manageable when it becomes a number:
- Define the rules the structure should satisfy: depth caps, ownership, licensing placement.
- Evaluate them continuously, producing a compliance percentage.
- Track the percentage over time: the slope is the drift rate, and a worsening slope is the early warning.
